The Hair Library
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Your salon waiting room says more than you think and most of the time it’s telling you to chase someone else’s hair. We’re flipping that script by building the Panache Hair Library: four coffee-table style guides meant to start real conversations about thinning hair, shedding, breakage, scalp health, grey hair, and what “believable” colour maintenance actually looks like in real life.
I share a moment with a client that still sticks with me: she says she thinks her hair is thinning and then apologises for bringing it up. That’s the quiet reality for a lot of women, especially when hormones, texture changes, and confidence collide. So we get specific and practical, including the three hair terms people mix up the most: density (how much hair you have), texture (strand thickness), and volume (how much space it takes up). When you can name what’s happening, your consultation stops being “I hate my hair” and becomes clear, solvable, and calm.
We also talk about why hair education often backfires when it turns into a sales pitch, and why I’d rather lose a product sale than sell false hope. You’ll hear the rules behind the Hair Library, why there are no miracle promises, when a stylist isn’t the answer and a dermatologist is, and why toppers and hair additions deserve to be normalised as confidence tools. If you want better hair advice, better questions, and a plan that matches your lifestyle and budget, you’ll feel seen here.

Rethinking The Salon Waiting Room
SPEAKER_00Think about the last salon waiting room you sat in. What was on the table? Old magazines? A celebrity with hair that took three people and two hours to create? Maybe it was a glossy brochure. Look, I've been doing hair for 30 years, and I think we've spent way too much time showing women somebody else's hair instead of helping them understand their own. So, at Pinochet Company, I'm changing what's on the table. Welcome to All About Hair with Denise. This is where we talk about hair, confidence, and why a good hair day can seriously change your whole mood. It's like hanging out and chatting about life, feeling good, and loving your hair. No pressure, no perfection. So grab your coffee, settle in, and let's talk about loving your hair and yourself a little more.
Building The Panache Hair Library
SPEAKER_00Hey guys, welcome back to the podcast. You know we've been dealing with lease complications and things like that. So in the meantime, I have been working on marketing materials, brochures, our prices, our education system, and I'm also working on something really, really cool. It is called the Panache Hair Library. I've created four coffee table style books that clients can pick up while they're waiting or in the processing room. The four books are thicker, that's for thinning hair, shedding, breakage, and scalp health, gray your way, it's gray blending, transitioning, covering, or embracing gray. The third one is the hair prescription. That's just understanding your own hair and what it needs. And then my fourth one is beautiful, believable hair. And that talks about dimensional color, maintenance, and realistic hair solutions. I didn't really want these to be brochures because I didn't want people to just pick them up and then throw them away. You know, I do the same thing. These aren't meant to feel like somebody's trying to sell you something because I'm not. I just want you to pick one up because it's beautiful and you start flipping through it, and then suddenly you learn something about your own hair. The Panache Hair Library is really built more around education rather than just a traditional salon
When Thinning Hair Feels Shameful
SPEAKER_00brochure. I want to tell you a story about one of my clients. She sits down in my chair and she says, I think my hair is thinning. And then she apologizes. She's sitting in a hair salon talking to a hairstylist about her hair, and she feels like she has to apologize for bringing it up. Wow. That's sad, don't you think? Here's what I've seen women do instead of talking to their hairstylists, me included. You search Google late at night, you watch TikToks and YouTube videos, you buy four products that all promise something different from Amazon. You try taking supplements, you try changing your shampoo, and then you're wondering if it's all caused by stress or stressing out that you're losing your hair. Nobody has ever explained to them what might be happening. You know what's sad is this woman was not apologizing for her hair. She was apologizing for taking up space with something she had quietly worried about for years. And here's the crazy part that client wants help. She is already spending money trying to solve the problem. She's just spending it everywhere except in her hair salon. She should be relying on her hairstylist to help her with her challenges. You see, most people haven't ever been taught about their own hair. They haven't. You know your shoe size. You probably even know your skin type. You know if you're nearsighted or far-sighted, but ask someone to describe their hair, and they're gonna usually say, it's fine, it's thick, or it's frizzy.
Density Texture Volume Made Clear
SPEAKER_00Well, here's three words I want you to learn real fast, okay? Because these are three words that everybody confuses, and they're three words that they're even confused in the hair salon by hairstylist. Here it is. Density. That's how much hair you have on your head. Texture, that's the diameter of the individual hair strand. Volume, how much space the hair appears to take up. Someone can have fine hair and a lot of it. Someone can have coarse strands and low density. Let me tell you about a little test you could do on yourself. Take just take one little piece of hair on your head. You don't have to pull it out of your head and run it through your fingers back and forth. Roll it. If you can feel it, you do not have thin hair. The texture of your hair is really fine if you can't feel it. You could still have a lot of fine hair on your head, but every single strand is really fine. People who have different types of hair, like the one I was just talking about with fine hair, lots of it, or coarse strands with low density, they should not be using the same products or getting the same haircut. I see this happening all the time.
Education Before Product Recommendations
SPEAKER_00All right, let's talk about why hair education usually doesn't work. Well, first, good education sometimes requires disappointing answers. Take thinning hair, for instance. There are times when I have to tell somebody that the shampoo in my hand is not going to regrow hair that is no longer growing. Yeah. I would rather lose a product sale than sell somebody hope. And second, people know when education turns into a sales pitch. You can almost feel it happen, can't you? Somebody teaches you something for like five minutes and then suddenly every answer ends with the bottle sitting on the retail shelf. Look, I know products do matter, the type of products you're using, and heck, I love professional hair care. And I believe in it. Yes, I do believe that professional hair care is better than that shampoo that you could buy at the five and dime down the street. The difference is the order that you put it in. Education has to come first, then recommendation comes second. As a client, you need to know why that shampoo is important to your hair. You need to know why that mousse can help you create the volume. You need to know why, not, oh, you need volume? Here, here you go. No. Okay, let's talk about why the Panache Hair
Four Books And The Ground Rules
SPEAKER_00Library. First of all, book one, thicker. The biggest thing I want women to understand is that shedding, breakage, and thinning are not the same thing. If I treat breakage like a hormonal thinning, I'm solving the wrong problem. If somebody's hair is breaking off because they're of heat styling and we're going in there thinking it is hormonal thinning, it's not the same thing. I also want to mention that we are going to be including toppers and hair additions in the salon as well. These are brilliant for people who are thinning on top of their head. And, you know, I really want to just normalize that. Normalize added hair, normalize extensions, toppers, pieces, whatever gives somebody confidence. They're tools, just like eyeglasses is a tool. My second book, Gray Your Way. There is no trophy for going gray. You can cover it, you can blend it, transition gradually, grow it all out, and guess what? You can change your mind. Yep. This is a personal decision for each individual woman, especially when hair and hormones begin changing at the same time. That is a tough, tough thing that happens. I'm going through it right now. So if anybody's out there and they're going through it too, we're in this together.
SPEAKER_01All right, my third book is hair prescription.
SPEAKER_00This one might be my favorite because I want women to understand their own hair. We talk about porosity, density, texture, maintenance, and lifestyle. This is also where the consultation becomes so much better. So instead of saying, I hate my hair, somebody can start saying, My ends feel dry, I have lower density around my temples, and my color gets warm after four weeks. Now we have something useful to work with behind the chair. And then book four, beautiful, believable hair. Oh my goodness. In this book, we talk about beautiful hair and maintenance because every hair color decision also has a calendar decision, meaning how often do you want to be in the salon? That blonde that somebody saved on Pinterest may mean you need more appointments. It may cost more money, it might be more maintenance, and you might need more home care. None of that means you shouldn't do it. It just means somebody should tell you before you start to do it. Here's the rules that I gave myself when I was creating these. Rule number one the 70 2010. 70% education and inspiration, 20% what the salon can do, and 10% product. If I flip that around, nobody's gonna believe me anymore. If I came out and I was trying to sell you product right off the bat before I educated you, no, it doesn't work like that. My second rule: Panachan company first, Euphora second. Look, we're gonna be a Euphora salon. I've used Euphora for years and I believe in it wholeheartedly, but I never want somebody to feel like I created an educational book just to get them to buy shampoo. Rule number three, no miracle promises. If something can help, we'll explain how. If it can't, we're gonna tell you that too. Rule number four, know when the stylist isn't the answer. Look, sudden, significant, or unexplained hair loss needs to be discussed with a doctor or a dermatologist. We're hairstylists, we're not doctors. Rule number five, stop making women feel embarrassed about their hair, especially thinning hair, changing texture, gray hair, and added hair. This is what I hope happens. I picture somebody sitting under a dryer or waiting for her color to process at Pinochan Company. And then she grabs one of these books and reads three or four pages. Then she comes back to the chair and says, Hey, I think what I'm experiencing might be breakage instead of hair loss. Or, hey, I didn't know gray blending was an option, or I think I want to talk about a topper. See, that changes the entire consultation. I don't expect these books to sell something, I expect them to start conversations.
Better Consultations And A Clear Ask
SPEAKER_00So these are for my salon owner friends out there that listen. We spend so much time asking, how do I sell more retail? I want you to turn that thinking around. Teach people more. Explain thinning hair better. Explain gray blending better. Explain what a toner does, explain why their haircut behaves differently at home. Explain what maintenance looks like before booking the service. When clients understand their hair, recommending the right service or product doesn't feel like selling anymore. It becomes the next logical step. If you've ever sat in a salon chair embarrassed because your hair is thinning, because it's changing texture or turning gray or it's breaking, or heck, just not behaving like it used to, I want you to know something. You are allowed to ask about it. No judgment, no miracle promises, just knowledge, options, and a plan. That's what I want Panache to feel like. Whether you're sitting in our chair, reading one of our books, or just listening to this podcast. Thanks again for being here. Thanks for listening to behind the scenes creating. And let me know if you'd like a copy of one of these books. Just hit me up in the chat and I'll send you one of them. Just let me know which one you'd like to see. And you could be one of the first to get one. Just know it's just going to be a PDF over the computer.
SPEAKER_01It's not going to be a hardback cover. Anyway, thanks for being here. I'll see you next week. And always remember, when you know better, you do better.
