Well, hey there, it's so wonderful to have you join us once again for another exciting episode.
Speaker 1:Today we're talking about a thought-provoking subject that might have you re-evaluating some of your leadership strategies. Yeah, so know those moments when you find yourself scratching your head and wondering why your salon or your spa is not performing or isn't firing on all cylinders? Well, get ready to have those light bulb moments, or at least that's what I like to call them, because we're talking about consequences and systems. Yeah, not real sexy. It's not a sexy subject, but how does your salon or your spa operate, with consequences? Look, we all have big dreams for our teams and our businesses, right? We think about outstanding customer service, a team that works in harmony and results that leave our clients wanting to come back for more, right? But here's the thing achieving those dreams takes more than just good intentions. Sometimes you could wing it, but most of the time it's about having the right tools in your leadership toolbox, am I right? Well, that's where we're going to begin.
Speaker 1:Picture this you have a toolbox and it's brimming with all kinds of various tools. And you know me, I like my tools, I love to create things. Some tools are flashy and attractive and you go out and you buy the new thing and it promises quick fixes. You know? Well, these are the consequences we often resort to when we encounter performance hiccups. You know those, do this. Or else tactics, but guess what? Do those even work? I mean, the outcome might not be what we hope for. And in today's world, you know, if you're just pouring out the consequences, you're going to have people leaving you left and right. Just pouring out the consequences, you're going to have people leaving you left and right. So fact number one consequences often breed that infamous I'll do just enough to get by attitude and who wants mediocre performances? Right, but it also might lead you to not having a team at all. Yeah, that's right. If you're just throwing out punches every time they come in late and you're, you know, handing down the gavel, yeah, it's not going to work for you.
Speaker 1:Okay, let's look at fact number two. This is a real eye-opener. Consequences rarely inspire that fire within our teams to go above and beyond. Yeah, sure, they might lead to compliance, but they won't get your team pumped up to reach for the stars. And that's what we all want, right? Imagine wanting your team to play hard and win, but offering them just a mere slap on the wrist when they stumble. That doesn't quite align, does it?
Speaker 1:Now, here's where it gets interesting. Picture a different set of tools in that leadership toolbox. These are the systems, yep systems, and each system is like a carefully crafted roadmap designed to lead us to a specific destination, and this destination is consistent excellence and growth. Yeah, think about it. If you're aiming to skyrocket your pre-book rates, you need a systematic approach to make that happen. You don't just show up and say, okay, I need everybody to pre-book today. Holidays are around the corner. No, that's not how it works. You have to have a system in place and make sure that everybody on your team knows what is expected and knows what the system is, and I guarantee you, once you get everyone trained on that system of pre-booking or whatever it is the system is, you will have excellence. You will have consistent growth.
Speaker 1:Here's another system that I like to always hit upon consultations with clients. This is a critical moment where we need a system in place to ensure top-notch service. So often I talk to clients and most clients think that they're not receiving a consultation and most stylists think they're giving a consultation. But you know, most of us, or I've seen, if you, if you don't have a system in place, you just stand behind the chair and go okay, what are we doing today? Okay, great, let's go get shampooed. That is not a system and that is definitely not a consultation. So if you don't have a system for your consultation, it's a good place to start. Believe me, go listen to my podcast, episode 133, on our five-step consultation, and this will give you some guidance on how to at least get started, and it's really, really simple.
Speaker 1:So systems aren't just about the processes, though. They're about shaping the behavior, the performance and, ultimately, the whole culture of your salon. But hold on, don't toss out consequences entirely. You have to have them, and they do have their place. So your employee handbook should lay out all the rules, and the rule violations naturally come with consequences. Like you wouldn't want somebody to show up, you know drunk, there needs to be a consequence to that right.
Speaker 1:However, here's the kicker Consequences shouldn't be the cornerstone of your leadership approach. They're kind of like the seasoning A little bit goes a long way, but too much can spoil the whole dish. You know, I've heard it said if you don't like the results you're getting, change it or tweak the system. So here's your challenge Take a look at your leadership toolbox. Yeah, are you? Are your shelves overflowing with just consequences, or do you have a diverse array of systems in place, ready to create the outcomes you dream of?
Speaker 1:Look, if you need help with creating your systems, reach out to me. That's what I do. Also, you'll want to sign up to get on our waiting list for our online course coming soon Million Dollar Salon Blueprint. This will lay out, step by step, not only how to outline your employee handbook, but also help you design systems in your salon. So you'll have your well-oiled machine. And I'll let you in on a little secret If you're on our waiting list, when our course comes out, you'll receive a coupon code and you'll be one of the first to have access. I know it's exciting.
Speaker 1:Look, before we wrap up, remember this systems aren't just about tools, they're about leadership. They require careful design, nurturing, training and a whole lot of coaching. And guess what? Engaged leadership is the secret sauce that no consequence can ever replace. That's a wrap for today's episode. I hope you're feeling as excited about this topic as I am.
