If you're dealing with hair loss, it could be really challenging to find the supplements that you need to be taking what works, what doesn't work? Well, before you take anything, make sure you check with your dermatologist. But today we're going to talk about a couple of supplements that you should not waste your money on, and then we'll talk about what really does work. Talk about what really does work. Welcome to All About Hair, the go-to podcast for stylists, salon owners and anyone passionate about hairstyling. Whether you're a seasoned stylist refining your skills or a curious listener looking to enhance your hair knowledge, we've got you covered. My mission is to uplift our industry by sharing valuable insights gathered along my journey. Get ready for enlightening discussions, captivating interviews and practical advice on marketing, sales and technical skills. This is the podcast all about hair, first and foremost. What supplements are not worth your money? You might be surprised by this one. What supplements are not worth your money? You might be surprised by this one Collagen. Did you know that collagen is really the leftover gelatin from meat byproducts? Yeah, that's gross. You might find some marine collagen in there somewhere. But it can help your hair come in stronger and it does help your hair follicles hang on to your hair longer, but it doesn't actually make you grow new hair. That's a common misconception people have of collagen, but that's why you notice that your nails might be getting stronger and your hair might be growing maybe faster, but it won't grow new hair. Another misconception. Another supplement that people assume helps is elastin. I probably wouldn't waste your money on elastin on this supplement. Although it does supposed to make your hair have more elasticity, which is bendability, it doesn't actually help your hair grow. And then here's a big one Coconut oil. Nope, nope. It might sound nice on the bottle because you know marketing, but it's In pill form. It actually doesn't do anything for your hair. Now, coconut oil it does help your hair become stronger if you use it externally, but not in pill form In a supplement. It doesn't do anything. So which hair supplements are worth buying? First and foremost, Biotin. Biotin actually increases the circulation and it actually helps your hair grow in thicker. It actually helps increase the blood flow on your scalp. Whether you're taking it as a supplement internally or it's in your shampoo or your scalp treatments, it's going to help you grow your hair faster, thicker, more lush. How about this one Pumpkin seed oil? Pumpkin seed oil has been scientifically proven to grow more hair and to help those people who have thinning hair. Even though biotin and pumpkin seed oil are more beneficial than the other three that we've said the collagen, the elastin and the coconut oil it is definitely worth saying you need to check with your dermatologist before you do anything. They'll be able to advise you of the best course of action to take.

Speaker 1:

What about your diet? What you're eating, because that is supplemental to the growth of your hair. Have you taken a look at your diet? Are you eating a healthy diet? Are you getting a balanced diet? If you're only eating, you know, or drinking protein drinks, that's not no, that's not going to do it. Or if you're on a weight loss journey and you're not getting enough calories, you might see thinning hair as well. If you lose weight too fast, your hair will thin.

Speaker 1:

But the thinning of your hair actually does have other factors. You know your age, your health, your genetics. Your diet is actually one thing that you can control. So what is one food that has been proven to help you with hair loss, like lentils packed with nine essential vitamins and minerals for healthy hair, and also biotin rich foods like sweet potatoes, bananas, nuts, seeds, liver if you want to eat liver those all have great vitamins and biotin in them. Those all have great vitamins and biotin in them.

Speaker 1:

One thing that I've been taking as well is I take one Brazil nut, and it's an organic, raw Brazil nut. It actually has selenium in it. This was not in the report I read, but I have seen other reports that say selenium actually helps with the shedding of your hair. So my husband and I and my son all take one Brazil nut a day. We haven't been taking it that long. It takes about three months before you see any kind of difference in your hair growth. But knowing what supplements work and what don't work so you don't waste your money on them Really good information to know.

Speaker 1:

And with all of you out there that are suffering and going through hair loss for whatever reason whether it be medical, age, heredity, weight loss you know it is a journey. There are some things in your control. There are some things that you can't control. I do know that when you go through a process of losing your hair, it can be traumatizing. I know it. I know it personally. I went through a period of alopecia when I was going through a lot of stress and it's it really is a devastating thing to go through. I feel your pain hair loss. There's all kinds of things you could do, not only supplements in your diet, but minoxidil. Minoxidil is another FDA approved treatment for hair loss and there are some things that minoxidil you can and cannot expect. So some side effects of minoxidil you can and cannot expect. So some side effects of Minoxidil.

Speaker 1:

You will shed hair when you first start using Minoxidil. Why it actually changes the course of your hair growth. Your hair grows in three stages and it actually speeds up the stages. So if your hair growth is in one stage and it's kicking it to the other stage, where that you don't lose hair, you might have to shed a few hairs to get to that stage. It's just part of the process. You might not, but you might. Also minoxidil you have to continuously use it. You have to use it for as long as you don't want to. You know your hair to thin. When you stop using it it stops working, so you will shed all your hair again. Also, it's best to use it twice a day, in the morning and at night, on dry hair, because if you put it on wet hair it just dilutes it, so you want to do it twice a day.

Speaker 1:

You can actually help the effectiveness of minoxidil A couple of things you can. You know those rollers that you put on your face, those ceramic rollers. They have ceramic rollers for your scalp as well, so you can put the minoxidil on and then take that that roller and roll it over your scalp, or use your fingers and massage it in, so any kind of stimulation on your scalp. You can also use red light therapy. So a light therapy on your scalp with minoxidil will help tremendously. So when you combine the treatments it actually helps.

Speaker 1:

You do need to know minoxidil is poisonous to animals. So there hasn't really been very many cases that you know animals have died or anything from minoxidil. But you just need to know that if you have little critters around your house, like we do, you just don't want your minoxidil to be out or you don't want it on your hands and then go pet your pets. Also, if you're taking it orally because you can take minoxidil orally you want to make sure that your pets can't get ahold of the pills. Anyway, minoxidil it does work. It does work, but again, check with your dermatologist.

Speaker 1:

I hope all of this has helped in your hair loss challenges. Hope this has given you some information that you may or may not have known. If you have any questions, if you have any concerns, if you you know anything about hair loss, I might not know the answers, but I could sure find the answers for you. I'm just here. You know all about hair. Like I say, and just remember, when you know better, you do better and go out and have a great day.
